Job Title: Product Designer - Design Systems (Remote Friendly)

As a Product Designer on the Design Systems team, you will help design components used by developers and designers building webstaurantstore.com. The work you do will  impact the experience of thousands of customers that visit our site each day.

As a WebstaurantStore remote employee, you'll enjoy the same training and support to be successful in your position as employees at our physical corporate locations. We stay connected through video meetings, training sessions, and collaborative forums, and provide opportunities for you to connect with other employees from across the country both professionally and personally.

To qualify for remote work, candidates must have:
  • Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 25mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used by WebstaurantStore to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • Access to a home router and modem.
  • A dedicated home office space that is noise and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.); PO Boxes are not supported; as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
  • Legal residents of one of the following states: (AL, AZ, AR, DE, FL, GA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MS, NV, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV, WI or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.

You will:
  • Help lead the design and delivery of components to the Zest Design System
  • Interview and collaborate with Product Designers across other teams to help build the components they need to succeed
  • Drive the evolution of Webstaurant's visual language and interaction pattern library
  • Design and define interaction patterns through components, documentation, and prototypes
  • Ensure our Design System meets standards and guidelines for accessibility
  • Specify and maintain our core principles in visual style, typography, spacing, motion, and interaction
  • Work with developers to maintain and create new components for our library
  • Collaborate with designers across teams to curate new aesthetic and patterns
  • Collaborate to test as needed to ensure usability and consistency
  • Work within scrum/agile methodologies
  • Be an expert in UI, UX, or visual design
  • Mentor, and guide less experienced teammates
Your daily job looks like:
  • Review an existing implemented asset, and document it's uses
  • Interview designers on the team about how they are using a specific component in their designs
  • Collaborate closely with design-developers and engineers to design a new component
  • Participating in team design critiques to understand the problems designers on the team are solving
You might work on:
  • Auditing and reviewing how tooltips are used across webstaurantstore.com and then designing a tooltip that ensures consistency of all tooltips. Followed by documenting how the design should be used, and then coordinating with a developer on the Design Systems team to ensure proper implementation.
  • Reviewing accessibility concerns for an implemented design system component with someone on the Accessibility team. Then updating the design, documentation and coordinating with a developer on the Design Systems team to update.

What does our hiring process look like:
  • A phone interview with a Team Manager to chat about the company, position, and most importantly, learn more about you. Our goal is to see if we're a match.
  • If we feel that you could be a match, we will contact you to schedule the next interview, or let you know if we feel that you aren't a good fit.
  • The next interview will involve other design managers and generally a member of your team, then you'll have a separate interview with the VP of Design. We will ask you general questions about design to test your understanding of design principles, and have you review design system work in your portfolio. Additionally, we will be reviewing your communication skills, and how well you align with our core values.
  • Last, we will either make you an offer, or let you know if we feel that you aren't a good fit.
